Liverpool Competition ECB Premier League: Lytham v Hightown
Lytham 153 all out. Hightown 154 for 8
After last weeks exhilarating victory, Lytham were brought down to earth by one of the leagues more modest clubs. A feature of a competitive league is that most teams
can beat other teams on the day & this proved to be the case at Hightown.
Lytham had one of their disasterous starts as Simon Long (0) & Antony Mulligan (3) were soon back in the pavillion.
On a strip where few teams have managed to rack up much of a total this season, Lytham like others before them, found it to be a geat leveller. It was a day for
grafters & Guy Roberts (18) along with the king of battlers captain Jimmy Wisniewski (46) put work before pleasure by grinding out scores in a stand of 50.
Perhaps the last thing Lee Hilton & Nick Knight, who are both struggling for form, required was a difficult track. They both failed to come to terms with conditions as did one of
last weeks heroes Rob Dingle.
Alan Flood (30) Lewis Dingle (15) & Marcus Sharp (25) then build a score which although low, was at least defendable.
Pick of the Hightown bowlers was Warhurst who returned figures of 5 for 49 in 23 overs.
In Hightowns reply, Marcus Sharp soon removed big hitting Mark Vosloo (4) but then both Sutcliffe (33) & Shetty (34) dug in to build a good early platform.
Once removed by Sharp & Michael Rigby respectively, Lythams hopes rose as Rigby then bagged both Phillips & Stoker each for no score.
Jimmy Wisniewski then joined the attack & claimed the next three Hightown wickets, however his 8 overs cost 38 runs & with Micheal Rigbys 13 overs going for an uncharacteristic 60 runs, Lytham were always just behind the pace.
When the eighth wicket fell, memories of the New Brighton match heroics flickered for a while, but these were quickly extinguished by Wheelan who threw his bat & all caution to the wind to notch a match winning 24 not out & see his side safely home.
This loss was a blow to Lythams championship aspirations, although with other results turning out the way they did, one victory is still all that separates the top six clubs.
Next Saturday, Lytham entertain bottom of the table Leigh at Church Road. Stumps 1.00pm
