Liverpool Competition ECB Premier League: Lytham v St. Helens

Lytham 251 for 6 dec. St Helens Recs 134 all out. Lytham win by 117 runs.

Fresh from their Saturday victory over Colwny Bay, St Helens Recs arrived at Church Road to face in form Lytham. Jimmy Wisniewski won the toss for a change & elected to bat first. His tactics were driven by the need to gain maximum points from all remaining games in order to keep alive Lythams outside chance of their first ECB Premier League title.

St Helens Recs attack is now spearheaded by ex Bootle overseas star, Kelby Pickering. He bowled with considerable pace, but Antony Mulligan and Simon Long picked off the odd loose delivery to record early boundaries. Not for the first time this season lady luck deserted Mulligan who was adjuged stumped rather unfortunately. Long continued to stroke boundaries, displaying excuisite timing and when Guy Roberts joined the party, boundaries flowed from both ends. Each batsmen passed the fifty mark and as Long progressed towards his maiden century, the crowd were on their feet willing him home. Sadly, it was not to be and on 97 seven he fell LBW his disappointment plain for all to see.

The second wicket stand between Long and Roberts had been worth 110. Guy Roberts pressed on untill he too, like Mulligan was adjuged stumped on 73. Lytham then lost the wickets of Jimmy Wisniewski, Lee Hilton and Richard Openshaw before Rob Dingle knocked up an undefeated 20 allowing Lytham to declare on 251 for 6 after just 44 overs. Pickering claimed 3 for 50 in his two spells.

St Helens Recs reply was steady untill Micheal Rigby broke the opening stand. Marcus Sharp gave way to Richard Openshaw who, just as he had on Saturday, claimed a wicket in his first over. Pickering (23 not out) tried to hold his team together, but found scoring dificult as wickets fell regularly at the other end. When support eventually came from Chris Lyon (40) top scoring at number ten, it was all too late. Jimmy Wisniewski 3 for 28 and the impressive Richard Openshaw 4 for 10, gradullly sqeezed the life out of any rearguard action threatened by St Helens Recs.

Harvesting a maximum 25 points from this workman like victory, Lytham moved up to fourth place, exactly 20 points behind leaders New Brighton. Next Saturday, Lytham host second place Bootle, stumps 12..00 midday. So tight is it at the top of the table, that If Lytham were to beat Bootle and all other results went their way, they could claim top spot. On the other hand, if the were to lose with all results going against them, they could find themselves in seventh place.

After Bootle, Lytham bring the 2007 season to a close with matches at Wallasey on Saturday 8th September, followed by the final game at Church Road on Saturday 15th September where the visitors are Southport and Birkdale.
